Confessions of a serial mower - back to normal

Yesterday was totally mad. Rain drove through cracks and places we didn't even know we had places. The dining room leaded light window, large and North facing of course, streamed with rivulets of water, draining down to the ledge and then along the beams to the wood floor. Pooling just short of my huge rug. We mopped up with towels hastily grabbed from bathroom and did the best we could to stem the tide.
I have lit the wood burner in there today, to try to dry and air out the room.
We recorded over 3 inches of rain this weekend. Extraordinary for this time of year -more rain in a day than usually for the whole of May. The dampness seems to be seeping through the house, except for my beloved kitchen with madam Aga sending out her warm rays to greet me. Thank god, and the occupants before me, for she!

Others, less fortunate in the neighbouring village have been without power since Sunday so I can only imagine how they are coping.

Our traditional Whitsun Gala held every year for the past 60 in the surroundings of Framlingham Castle was washed out. Cancelled for the first time in living memory.
Bert Stocks Fun Fair arrived, but no fun was to be found. As fast as they tried to
erect their equipment, it just sunk into the mire that is the Castle Meadow. If it didn't have a running moat, it has one now.
Fields stand with water - just two weeks ago we were despairing that the beet would die through lack of rain, and now they stand up to their necks in water.
Their leaves are at least touching over the rows, on schedule, by the Suffolk Show, tomorrow. Surely it will stop raining by then. The Trinity Showground at Bucklesham near Ipswich [named after the Suffolk Trinity of horse, sheep and red poll cattle) stands on light sandy soil, "boy's land" as they say round here - so it should drain and be usable we hope. For a wonderful day out, where Town meets Country, there's not much to beat the Suffolk Show - especially if the sun should shine on it. It usually does. Here's hoping.
A view of our barley taken last week, on a Suffolk sunny day.

We also had our log burner on yesterday and up here in our new barn conversion on the hill we keep finding find places where the 'flashing' on the roof is not secure as the wind changes and the rain drives through another area!!
Aaarrrghh!!

Hope the show is not too much of a washout. I love 'traditional' shows like that-only one in our house-can't believe neither boys have any interest!

warm wishes Mousie

PS-many thanks for your very flattering comments on my blog!! You are SO kind-but please note Mousie-the photo is from 15 years ago and I fear to have aged rather a lot over recent times!!x

Just catching up Mousie now that things seem to have settled. Loved your yesterdays story about how you got GOH. We haven't had torrential rain like you but it's been very cold.

I'm just doing a mammoth catch-up too, it's amazing how behind you get when you miss a few days. I can sooo relate on the weather - we've had leaks springing up all over the place. Freezing too! Loved your one below, glad there was a nice happy ending! So many questions, probably very intrusive .... were you always close to the boys? Was it tough, being a step-mum? The heiress is certainly lucky to have such a devoted Grandma.

Hello Mousie,
It has been raining here since last Friday, and still raining as I type. Thank heavens for woodburner, all snug and cosy.

Sorry about your rain etc. Its bloody awful here in Surrey where i live. The powers that be DARE not put us on hosepipe ban later this year!

It's so sad that local events are being cancelled. So much work goes into preparing...but you cant predict weather.

Thank God for St Aga and St Rayburn we have normally switched ours off for the 'summer' by now, think it'll be on for a few days yet, hope the show shines

How awful to have to light a fire at the end of May - you should be able to depend on better weather by this time of year. Can't imagine how an Aga works, but it must be a very cosy thing to have in the house.
Thank you for your lovely comments over the past few days!

that is a LOT of rain. i don't think i've ever seen it rain so hard it came up into the house, but our houses are set on foundations because it gets so cold here in the winter. i *have*, however, seen rain so hard that the streets flooded and the manhole covers popped off and shot 15 feet into the air from the force of water running through the sewers.

not pleasant. stay in the kitchen!
